Unboxed vs pre-owned vs refurbished iPhones: what is the difference?

Sealed new: the starting point

A sealed new iPhone is untouched in its original box, with the full manufacturer's warranty claimed through the brand's authorised service centres. It is the most expensive option and the only one where you are certainly the first owner.

Unboxed (open box): near-new for less

An unboxed iPhone has had its box opened, perhaps for a display unit, a gift that was not wanted, or a change of mind, but the phone itself is unused or barely used. In Amritsar many people call these box-pack phones.

You get near-new condition, usually with the original accessories, for less than sealed. Ask for the battery health reading (it should be at or very close to 100%), the activation date if it was switched on, and whether a bill comes with it.

Pre-owned (second hand): the best value

A pre-owned iPhone was used by someone before and is sold in its current condition. Good shops grade it so you know what to expect. At our shop, Grade A means light signs of use at most, and Grade B means visible marks on the body but fully working, at a lower price.

The two numbers that matter most are the grade and the battery health. A Grade A phone with 90% battery health can feel almost new for a lot less money.

Refurbished: repaired before resale

Refurbished means the phone was repaired or had parts replaced, such as a battery or screen, before being sold again. Done well, that can be a good thing. The problem is that the word is often used loosely for any used phone.

Apple's own certified refurbished programme is a separate thing: those phones are refurbished by Apple itself. For phones refurbished by anyone else, ask exactly which parts were replaced, and check Parts and Service History in Settings. We only call a phone refurbished when such work was actually done.

Warranty: what you can expect from each

A sealed new iPhone carries the full manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase, claimed through the brand's authorised service centres with your bill. An unboxed phone may still have most of its manufacturer's warranty left, because the warranty usually runs from the first activation; you can check the remaining coverage by entering the serial number on Apple's Check Coverage website.

Pre-owned phones are often out of their manufacturer's warranty, so what the shop offers matters more. Ask exactly what is covered, for how long, and get it written on your bill. For refurbished phones, ask who did the work and whether the replaced parts are covered.

Battery: the hidden difference

Two phones of the same model can feel very different because of the battery. Sealed and unboxed phones should be at or very close to 100% battery health. Pre-owned phones vary: above 85% is comfortable for daily use, and 90% or more feels close to new.

If a used phone has a newly replaced battery, Parts and Service History in Settings will usually show it. That can be a plus, as long as the replacement was done properly and you are told about it before you pay.

Why the prices differ

The price gap between these options comes from risk and remaining life, not just age. You pay most for a sealed phone because nothing about it is uncertain. An unboxed phone costs less because the box is open, even though the phone is near new. A pre-owned phone costs least because it has been used and its battery and body have some wear, which is exactly why its grade and battery health should be shown upfront.

Which one should you buy?

Still unsure? Our five-question quiz suggests a phone from what is in stock today, based on how you use your phone and your budget.

  • Buy sealed new if you want the latest model, the full warranty and to be the first owner.
  • Buy unboxed if you want near-new condition and are happy to save some money for an opened box.
  • Buy pre-owned if value matters most: a recent model with good battery health often costs much less than new.
  • Buy refurbished only if the seller can tell you exactly what was replaced, and you can check it yourself.

Red flags with any of them

  • The seller will not show the battery health or the IMEI.
  • Find My iPhone is still on, or the phone asks for someone else's Apple Account.
  • A used phone is called refurbished or new without any explanation.
  • Big claims instead of details: ask for the grade, battery reading and bill status instead.

Questions and answers

Is an unboxed iPhone the same as new?

Almost. The phone is unused or barely used, but the box has been opened, so it is not sealed new. It usually costs less than sealed. Check the battery health, the activation date and whether a bill comes with it before you buy.

Is pre-owned the same as refurbished?

No. Pre-owned means used and sold in its current condition. Refurbished means it was repaired or had parts replaced before resale. A good seller tells you which one a phone is and, for refurbished phones, exactly what was changed.

Which is better value, unboxed or pre-owned?

Pre-owned is usually the better value, because it costs the least. A Grade A pre-owned iPhone with high battery health can feel nearly new. Unboxed is the safer choice if you want near-new condition and are paying a little more for it.
